EXTRACTIONS

Our dentists make every effort to preserve your natural teeth. However, extractions are necessary when decay has made the tooth unsalvageable or when you have an advanced periodontal disease. When a tooth is malformed, damaged, impacted or ingrown, different procedures are used, but all extractions are considered surgery. Depending on which tooth is removed, we can offer you a replacement in the form of a dental implant or oral prosthetic.

There are some extractions that need to be referred out to the specialist called an oral surgeon. They will typically take out teeth that are more complicated, such as wisdom teeth or teeth that are close to vital nerves or structures. Furthermore, oral surgeons are able to put nervous patients to sleep under IV sedation for a more comfortable over all experience. For patients who are interested in replacing the missing tooth with an implant, oral surgeons can also graft and sometimes place the implant on the same day the tooth comes out.

Care instructions for after Extraction

Instructions for after the extraction can vary depending the type of surgery performed. Your doctor will always discuss post operative care for your particular case at the time of your appointment.

In general, it is always a good idea to treat the area with care, avoid chewing anything hard in the area and doing activities that could create any negative pressure such as drinking through a straw or spitting with force. After the first 24-48 hours, gentle warm salt water rinses are recommended to help lower swelling and increase healing.
